White Corner Hutch

It's been a little while since I've done a blog post, and the reason for that is simply this: I haven't finished any furniture to blog about.  I got this pretty little number done today, so I'm very excited to finally write a post :)

I think I scored this hutch off Kijiji, but to be honest, I'm having a hard time remembering.  I decided to paint it white, and try a new technique for the inside.

I removed the back panels, and covered them in a deep teal paper I found at Michael's.  Then I nailed the back panels back on.  The shelves I painted white, and the decal in the door I left.

I think it's quite pretty.

Wah... bad photo.  But you get the idea.

I espesially love the original antique hardware.

Oh - I should say, this hutch is my latest paint experiment.  I made my own chalk paint.  Yep, that's right - all by myself.  It's quite simple - 1 cup flat paint mixed with 2 tbsp unsanded grout.  No more $40 cans of Annie Sloan for me.  (But don't worry Painted Bench - I will still be in to buy the clear wax.  Haven't found a substitute for that gold yet!)

Actually, you may remember I've been slowly working on my living room.  I did sew up some cushions for my new couch.  That hutch looks like it belongs in there.  It may stay.

Now I have to show you my awesome retro couch.  Awhile back I asked for advice on cushion colours.  The general consensus was pops of red, coral, or orange.  I decided to start with a burnt orange, and go from there.

Unfortunately, Mark still hates this couch.  It might not make it in our house.  We'll see.

Now, onto what else I was busy with last week.  I helped my friend Marika put new floors in her house.  She just painted the walls and trim, and it looks so fresh and clean.  Here's the (almost) before.

Here's Marika, working away on the trickiest corner.  It's fun having some house-y DIY skills and sharing them with friends.

And here it is, all finished.

Mark and I went to a Hillsong concert.  It was a bit of heaven on earth.  Here is the song, "Shine your light" and everyone held up their cell phones.  Twas kinda cool.  Cops was packed out.

Then this weekend we took off to Peterborough to help Mark's sister, Laura, renovate her house.  I didn't take any pictures, but here is a shot of her new adobe.  I think it's the cutest little house ever.

The best part is the house to the left of it is Michael and Andrea's house.  So when we go visit, it's like a family party on the block.

And finally, here's the closing picture of my monkey's.  They are getting really good at independent play.  They can sit and play by themselves for hours.  It's pretty sweet.

Well, that's a week for me.  Hopefully I'll be able to write another blog post this week.  I've been working hard on a custom dinning set, so I'll share photos of that.  Colleen, if you're reading this... the set is almost done!  Horay!

  1. Great job on the hutch!
You can use Minwax Finishing Paste instead of Annie Sloan wax. It is $10 for a tub at Home Depot or Lowes and easier to use.
